Yammer

Thanks for taking the time to give us honest feedback. While many of you may have a specific feature in mind (build this!), we’d ask you to add a note about WHY. What’s the problem you’re trying to solve, what’s the task you’re trying to do. The better we understand that, the better we can make Yammer.

  1. Allow users to change order of Groups

It would be extremely helpful if we can arrange the order of the group. Individuals should be able to customize that on their own. For example for Marketing team members, they would want all the marketing groups to be at the top etc.

This is no longer prioritized, but we’re working on a few new improvements to your groups list. We may revisit this in the future.

To learn about how we decide what features to build, check out this talk members our user research, product management, and data science team gave at Ignite in September 2017. It shares our process of all the methods we use to listen to our customers and how they input into our roadmap. https://myignite.microsoft.com/sessions/53799?source=sessions

  2. Be able to pin messages to the top of groups

The idea is to be able to pin messages to the top of a group. This could be used to post welcome messages or important information. Announcements do stay at the top until read but that does disappear and doesn't affect new joiners to that group.

  3. Post a thread to multiple groups

Yammer groups are silos; people have to join and subscribe to the thread to get notifications of new threads, and 'sharing' a thread to another group just creates another conversation in another silo. Just like how I can add in other people to the group, I'd like to be able to add in up to two additional groups (I'd need to be a member of the group in order to add them). This would mean a thread has a one-to-many relationship with groups.

We are working towards connecting All Company to be an Office 365 group. This requires significant work due to it’s size and because it automatically includes everyone in the company. Once this work is done, the All Company group will then be customizable similar to other groups.

Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for this in the meantime – due to the fact that All Company was not engineered the same as other Yammer groups, it’s not as simple as revealing functionality to edit. We understand the pain point, and look forward to delivering this functionality in the future.

  5. Allow existing groups to be merged

It should be possible to merge two or more existing groups.

When groups are created its not always possible to predict successful they will be. Network effects etc may cause some groups to be successful and have traffic and other groups to go quiet. Additionally groups may grow to subsume topics that originally had a specific group as it may be found that the topic is too niche for it's own group.

Given this when one group (A) effectively becomes a superset of another group (B) and where the other group (B) has gone very quiet then it is desirable…

We recognize that “group sprawl” happens, that groups become inactive but still contain relevant information, and that organizations use Yammer as a common knowledge base that works best when information is organized and easy to find. We don’t have plans to build this right now, but we’re thinking about this problem and appreciate the insight.

  6. Support a traditional threaded view with replies collapsible under the message they reference

It's hard to parse the reply-to chain of a Yammer conversation. It would be easier if replies were indented under the message they reference and if the reply chains were collapsible,

We hear a lot of requests around making longer threads easier to digest, and are thinking about this problem. We don’t have plans to build a solution soon, but we’re considering this specific solution and others. Thanks for your insight!

  7. connect yammer group to existing office 365 group

Upon creation of a yammer group I would like the option to connect it to an existing Office 365 group. Also have the choice of which feed to be used for discussions. Yammer or Outlook. A bonus would be if there's a way of changing it over timer if the usage or demands changes.

  8. Enable inline images

There is an inability to add images inline with the text of a post; they are all bunched together at the end of the post. This means people reading posts that refer to multiple images don't know which image is being referred to as they read the post, or the author has to write 'refer fig.1; refer fig.2' and so on.

Currently we aren’t seeing a huge number of Yammer conversations with multiple attached images, but we absolutely EXPECT to see that number grow as more people use Yammer for getting work done.

Question for you: in the past month, what types of messages have you posted or read that included multiple images? (i.e. schematics, event photos, etc.?)

  10. Use SharePoint document libraries, or even OneDrive libraries, instead of Yammer file storage

For us, discussions very often focus on documents. The Yammer file storage is not a suitable place for storing important documents: there's no taxonomy, no document management and poor discoverability.

  13. Allow admins to choose whether to block messages to All Company/Network or remove it completely

I've seen lots of different opinions on this. Whilst some admins find All Company useful, others don't. Providing admins with the choice whether to lock down the All Company to admin only posts/group creation would be a welcome feature.

The ability for them to choose whether or not they want the All Company group altogether would also be welcomed.

  14. Security in "All company group"

Yammer could offer the ability to be able to limit on an Admin level who is able to post to the “All Company” feed or the ability to hide or delete this group.

Also, offer the posibility of security in "All company group" for a better management. For example:

    1. Remove or hide the “All company” group?
    2. Limit people who are writing in “All company” group?
    3. Restrict comments posting and instead allow to use the “Like” feature?

  15. Allow posting on behalf of / User delegation

I some cases you don't want to post from your personal profile but from a generic/admin profile.
Or switching between users would work too.

  16. Allow admins to export a group members list

Allow admins to export a group members list via the group settings, and highlight which members are admins. This can be useful when a group is changing and its membership needs top be reviewed, and also if a group is closing in favour of using another group. The group members could be invited to the other group by exporting them into a csv and then uploading them into the other group.

  17. See who voted for what on a poll

Ability to have users vote on a poll and group admins (or designated user) see who voted for what. We have multiple uses where we are asking a preference on something and to follow up on it we need to know who those people are.

  18. have a team event calendar

I would love to have a pinned calendar/ roadmap somewhere on the side for each group so that people can see the upcoming events in the corresponding areas (marketing & communication internal events/ product sprints, etc...)

  19. An option to disable welcome messages.

When you have several thousand users joining yammer, the feed gets overwhelmed with welcome messages. It would be great to have an option in the admin console to disable these welcome messages.

    Hi Ken,

We have in the past experimented with whether or not to show these messages. What we have so far, however, is that they are an important mechanism to welcome and on-board new users, and make them feel at home in the Yammer network. Therefore, we have decided to keep showing these messages for smaller networks – as soon as a network reaches 1000 users, the messages will no longer be shown.

We are also more holistically thinking about the onboarding experience at this point though, and as part of this, will also re-consider whether the #joined message is still the most effective way to welcome new users.

  20. Allow hotlinking to specifc posts/comments

Have a way to get the URL for any given post/comment within a tread so that can be cross posted to other groups. For example to send a user straight to an answer instead of to a thread.
