Allow existing groups to be merged
It should be possible to merge two or more existing groups.
When groups are created its not always possible to predict successful they will be. Network effects etc may cause some groups to be successful and have traffic and other groups to go quiet. Additionally groups may grow to subsume topics that originally had a specific group as it may be found that the topic is too niche for it's own group.
Given this when one group (A) effectively becomes a superset of another group (B) and where the other group (B) has gone very quiet then it is desirable to simply close that group and concentrate the traffic for that topic in one group. However the history is valuable. Simply closing the group means the history is lost to those future users who wouldn't know to join the historical group, and anyway it is inconvenient to join a closed group just for history. In this situation it is desirable to merge group B into group A.
We recognize that “group sprawl” happens, that groups become inactive but still contain relevant information, and that organizations use Yammer as a common knowledge base that works best when information is organized and easy to find. We don’t have plans to build this right now, but we’re thinking about this problem and appreciate the insight.

Any update please? I too have far too many communities and need to consolidate them. Thanks

Is there any update on this request? I have way too many communities, I need to get them condensed?

Despite the acknowledgement that "organizations use Yammer as a common knowledge base that works best when information is organized and easy to find," Yammer has prioritised text formatting and a reaction palette.
I'd respectfully suggest to the Yammer team that it's time to revisit group merging.
in another forums I use on a personal level we retain links to historic pages so we can still use search facilities to obtain past information.
Any update on this long outstanding request ? I get this question asked every week. People want to do the right thing and reduce groups. Even if a gold plated group merge option can not be created, a simple move all message IDs from one group to another would solve 90% of our requests. Group memberships can be handled offline, or perhaps later. This is a quick win and all down to moving post and group relationship ID, so technically quite simple to implement.

We have run into same situations that David Miller articulates above very well. Am hopeful that this functionality will be added soon.
Another point is that the larger a company is, the easier it is to create groups with the same content but different titles in different ecosystem (design thinking/ d.school/ prototyping). Once you realize you talk about the same it would be nice to mix and merge the groups. It is even more likely the larger groups are more active and more attractive.
Absolutely something we need. This is something SalesForce Chatter offers out of the box.
What Gareth said.
Any update? We're closing on three years of consideration.

this is a no-brainer - giving individuals the opportunity to set up groups is great, but when you realize (and the founders of both groups agree), that it makes absolute sense to merge, it should just be a drag and drop function (with maybe a permission step from the founders of both groups?

The consideration of Microsoft is a time consuming process.
Managing content in yammer is a basic feature for enterprise systems. Merging is just one small, but important step.
We need this feature for the EXACT same reasons everyone else here is stating. Any update on when this feature will be added? It's pretty lame that 2 years and 302 votes later this has still not happened.
please add this features! we have many inactive group and i wanna merge together so that all the useful informaiton wont be lost.
please add this merge feature
We are looking to merge two groups so this tool would be incredibly helpful. Is there any news on whether this is now possible as it is two years since the post recognizes the need and is considering the need?

Yes please add this feature! Saving useful content in non-active groups and merging them into a single group would make it fantastic.
The merge needs to include the users of the (non-active) group/s into the new group!
Is this feed still being monitored by Microsoft?
I would like to know if the ability to merge groups has been developed yet? We don't want to lose messages of two teams that are now one, how do you pick one over the other without conflict?

As Noel F says, get it done, now it's almost october!: It's April 2018. Any idea on when this is actually going to happen? The ability to merge groups seems like common sense and (should be) a fairly normal administrative task to clean up Yammer. I understand this may be easier asked than implemented.... 18 months later, this should definitely have moved on from the "we're considering this" stage
