Allow existing groups to be merged
It should be possible to merge two or more existing groups.
When groups are created its not always possible to predict successful they will be. Network effects etc may cause some groups to be successful and have traffic and other groups to go quiet. Additionally groups may grow to subsume topics that originally had a specific group as it may be found that the topic is too niche for it's own group.
Given this when one group (A) effectively becomes a superset of another group (B) and where the other group (B) has gone very quiet then it is desirable to simply close that group and concentrate the traffic for that topic in one group. However the history is valuable. Simply closing the group means the history is lost to those future users who wouldn't know to join the historical group, and anyway it is inconvenient to join a closed group just for history. In this situation it is desirable to merge group B into group A.
We recognize that “group sprawl” happens, that groups become inactive but still contain relevant information, and that organizations use Yammer as a common knowledge base that works best when information is organized and easy to find. We don’t have plans to build this right now, but we’re thinking about this problem and appreciate the insight.
adding my support for this idea as we currently have 3-4 different Yammer communities that need to be merged
Please get this done, so we can our slowly dying Yammer alive again. Because of the sprawl we use it less and less...

It is currently possible to move a single conversation from one group to another. With enough time, you could effectively move all conversations from one group to another and accomplish this goal. It's not ideal, but it could be helpful to move important conversations from group B into group A.
YES YES please get this done. Chillibreeze needs this.
Any updates on this?
Fingers crossed this can happen.
Its May 2018 and we would kindly ask MS to consider it again!

It's April 2018. Any idea on when this is actually going to happen? The ability to merge groups seems like common sense and (should be) a fairly normal administrative task to clean up Yammer. I understand this may be easier asked than implemented.... 18 months later, this should definitely have moved on from the "we're considering this" stage.

Honestly, I'm not that great of a web developer and I could have implemented this by now.
Any updates on this feature?
It seems a conflict that you can open any type of Yammer group (an MS feature), thereby creating massive amounts of "invented here" groups (an MS feature). Surely the power of collaboration is uniting these groups (NOT an MS feature). It seems a huge hole in MS strategy that there is NO logical support for merging groups in a usable fashion. One of your core features is "share and collaborate with your network of co-workers." But how can you do that when Yammer supports such a flat structure. It is spread so thin with so many groups it fights against an intelligent use of this tool.

Please implement this feature.
Sep 29, 2016?
MS Just say NO, at least we will have our sense of righteous indignation instead of shriveling hope?
If you keep asking for suggestions that have no hope of becoming real no one will make suggestions anymore?

This is really something that shouldn't still be in "consideration" mode 2 years later (I've seen requests for this sine 2015). When can there be some kind of movement on this topic as it seems there are numerous organizations that could use this feature.

hello Emma .. as other commentors also expressed .. this is a real pain when you work in a big organization that the "group sprawl" cannot be controlled and a group merging function is not available ..
Will this pain continue with the move towards Teams?

This is an obvious and often need. It has been some 14 months since "we're considering this," any progress?

It has been over a year since this "was considered" by MS.. any progress ?
This is a key feature which is fundamental when trying to manage your Yammer networks.
Given that organisational change is constant nowadays, and more often than not companies are consolidating departments by merging them (not necessarily creating new or closing old ones), surely the need to 'merge groups' in Yammer is becoming more important? It is great that David has raised this idea, and I would add that it is not just about merging groups that go quiet or are more successful, without the 'merge group' feature, it risks being a barrier to successful organisational change (maintaining the departmental 'silo' thinking that most large companies suffer from, by displaying the existing departments / groups rather than a merged one - a digital mirror of the silo thinking we all want to avoid!). Please vote for David's excellent idea and let's get this higher up the priority list...
Any news on this?
And what is the outcome of that thinking? We did an event on day 1 and another on day 2. Afterwards it is appropriate wish to join the 2 groups.
Alternative could be to create a new group and have the option to import the data from other groups.
